However, the research into trust building mechanisms in darkweb marketplace remains scattered and unfocused, largely because the dark web is a relatively new phenomenon. While most virtual currency activity is licit, virtual currencies can be used for illicit activity, including sanctions evasion through darknet markets, peer-to-peer exchangers, mixers, and exchanges. This includes the facilitation of ransomware schemes and other cybercrimes.

Darknet markets, also known as cryptomarkets, are online marketplaces that operate on the dark web. These markets are accessible only through special software, such as the Tor browser, and are used to trade goods and services that are often illegal in the physical world.
What Can You Find on Darknet Markets?
Considering the monthly sales volume by category (Fig. 5), we observed a similar trend for available listings (Fig. 3), with most sales occurring between mid-2014 and mid-2015. Specifically, in the “Mean/Total” row, each USD column (Min, Max, Median, etc.) is averaged by dividing the sum of all product category prices by the number of product types, while solely the column “# Listings” is totaled. The weighted mean dark web access is the result of taking the sum of the product of the category price and the number of listings of the same category, divided by the total number of listings. Thus, each mean is weighted by the number of listings available in each product category. Figure 6c shows that, when marketplaces are ranked according to transaction volume, the second-largest marketplace is preferred in the majority of cases (31.8%).
The results are similar to prior research done on normal drug markets that determined that police interventions have no significant effect on changing drug prices. With the rapid growth of drugs being sold on darknet markets, it is critical for law enforcement to understand how the markets react to police interventions. The data analysed here misses some bigger markets, such as the first Silkroad, Hydra, Empire, Hansa, Wall Street, and Sheep. The reasons for their exclusion were that they were not included in the data archive or lacked sufficient product categorization needed for the current analyses.
If cryptocurrency is held in a customer account on a darknet platform, it’s always at risk if a site shuts down.
